How much does pet insurance cost?

By the WhichPetPlan editorial team · Last verified 2026-08-04

Across the insurers we review, illustrative starting premiums for a healthy one-year-old run about $28 to $62 per month for dogs and $14 to $35 per month for cats. Lemonade is the cheapest entry point in our data ($28 for dogs, $16 for cats) and Trupanion the most expensive ($62 for dogs, $35 for cats). These are starting estimates, not quotes: your real price depends on species, breed, age, ZIP code, and the deductible and reimbursement rate you pick, and it rises every year as your pet ages.

Illustrative starting prices by insurer

For dogs, our reviewed plans start at $28 per month with Lemonade, $33 with Pets Best, $38 with Spot, $40 with Figo, $41 with Embrace, $44 with Healthy Paws, $47 with Fetch and $62 with Trupanion. For cats: $14 with Pets Best, $16 with Lemonade, $21 with Spot, $22 with Embrace, $23 with Figo, $24 with Healthy Paws, $27 with Fetch and $35 with Trupanion. Every figure is an illustrative estimate for a healthy young animal, verified 2026-07-27, and none of them is the price you will necessarily be quoted.

What moves your quote

Breed is the biggest lever after species. Our breed guides carry illustrative starting estimates for a healthy one-year-old: a Beagle runs about $36 per month while a French Bulldog runs about $74 and a Bulldog about $81, because airway surgery, disc disease and skin claims are priced in. Among cats, a Domestic Shorthair starts around $16 while a Sphynx starts around $38.

Configuration is the second lever. A higher deductible and a lower reimbursement rate cut the premium, sometimes in half, while a low deductible with 90 percent reimbursement and an unlimited annual cap pushes it up. Age is the third: premiums rise every year as your pet gets older, and owners should budget for roughly double the starting premium by age ten.

How to read a cheap quote

The lowest quote is usually the most restrictive configuration: a high deductible, 70 percent reimbursement and a low annual cap. Spot offers caps from $2,500 to unlimited, the widest menu in our lineup, which also makes it the easiest plan to accidentally under-buy. Compare quotes only at matched settings, and treat any single monthly figure, ours included, as a starting point rather than a price.

Why is my quote so different from the prices listed?
Listed premiums are illustrative estimates for a healthy one-year-old. Real quotes depend on your pet’s breed, age, ZIP code and the deductible and reimbursement rate you choose, and they rise every year as your pet ages.
Do pet insurance premiums go up?
Yes. Premiums rise every year with your pet’s age, often above general inflation. Budget for roughly double your starting premium by age ten. Insurers generally cannot single your pet out for a rate hike because you claimed.
