How much does puppy insurance cost?
Puppy insurance uses the same accident-and-illness pricing as any young dog. Across the eight insurers we review, illustrative starting premiums for a healthy one-year-old dog run about $28 to $62 per month. Lemonade is the cheapest entry in our data at $28 per month and is the catalog pick for puppies and tight budgets. Trupanion is the most expensive at $62. Breed moves the number more than the word puppy does: a Beagle starts around $36 per month while a French Bulldog starts around $74 and a Bulldog around $81. These are starting estimates for a healthy young animal, verified 2026-07-27, not quotes and not a separate puppy price list. Real premiums depend on breed, age, ZIP code, and the deductible and reimbursement rate you pick, and they rise every year as the dog ages.
Illustrative starting prices, not puppy quotes
We do not publish a separate puppy-only price table. The catalog figures on this site are illustrative starting estimates for a healthy one-year-old, which is the closest published number we have to a young dog. For dogs, reviewed plans start at $28 per month with Lemonade, $33 with Pets Best, $38 with Spot, $40 with Figo, $41 with Embrace, $44 with Healthy Paws, $47 with Fetch and $62 with Trupanion. For a kitten or young cat the same catalog runs $14 to $35 per month (Pets Best $14, Lemonade $16, Trupanion $35).
Age still matters. Premiums rise every year as the pet gets older, and owners should budget for roughly double the starting premium by age ten. A puppy is typically at the cheap end of that age curve, which is why the one-year-old starting estimates are the right ballpark, not a senior quote.
What actually moves a puppy quote
Breed is the biggest lever after species. High-risk dogs are priced for the claims they are known for: airway surgery and disc disease for French Bulldogs and Bulldogs, IVDD for Dachshunds. Low-risk dogs like Beagles sit near the bottom of the range. Configuration is the second lever. A higher deductible and a lower reimbursement rate cut the premium; a low deductible with 90 percent reimbursement and an unlimited annual cap pushes it up. ZIP code is the third. Insurers price by ZIP, not by state, and we have no per-state puppy prices. State pages on this site reuse the national ranking and the same illustrative estimates.
The lowest quote is usually the most restrictive configuration: a high deductible, 70 percent reimbursement and a low annual cap. Spot offers caps from $2,500 to unlimited, the widest menu in our lineup, which also makes it the easiest plan to accidentally under-buy. Compare quotes only at matched settings.
This page is about price, not timing or worth-it
When to enroll is a different question: the week you bring the puppy home, before any symptom can become a pre-existing exclusion. Whether insurance is worth the premium is also a different question: it depends on whether a $5,000 to $10,000 bill would change the treatment you choose. Those answers live on their own pages. This page only answers what it costs.
