Does pet insurance cover allergies?
Yes, with one large catch. Allergies are illness claims, and a newly diagnosed allergy claims under standard accident and illness terms once the illness waiting period passes: the dermatology workup, allergy testing, prescription medications and prescribed follow-ups all reimburse minus your deductible, at your chosen rate, up to your annual limit. The catch is that insurers treat ongoing allergies as a chronic condition, so once itching, ear trouble or skin irritation is documented before enrollment or during the wait, the allergy is excluded for the life of the policy and later flare-ups attributed to it follow that exclusion.

Are allergies an illness claim or a pre-existing condition?
Classification depends entirely on timing. An allergy that first shows signs after enrollment and after the illness waiting period claims as a straightforward illness, alongside infections and hereditary conditions. Those illness waits run about 14 days at Lemonade, Embrace, Spot, Pets Best and Figo, up to 15 days at Fetch, 15 days at Healthy Paws, and 30 days at Trupanion.
Anything documented earlier flips the other way. A single itchy-skin or ear-infection note before coverage starts can be treated as the first sign of an allergic condition, and because itching, ear infections and skin irritation are recorded symptoms, insurers connect them to a later allergy diagnosis and exclude both.
What allergy care does a covered diagnosis pay for?
When the allergy is new and covered, the claimable path mirrors a real dermatology case: the veterinary exam and workup, allergy testing, prescription medications, medicated baths prescribed for the covered condition, special diets where prescribed, and follow-up visits for flare-ups. Each claim reimburses minus your deductible, at your chosen 70, 80 or 90 percent rate, up to your annual limit.
Wellness add-ons do not fund any of this. Add-ons pay fixed allowances toward routine care like exams and prevention; base accident and illness policies pay the treatment claims. Allergy treatment is exactly the kind of recurring, unpredictable cost insurance exists for, unlike the predictable checkups wellness plans subsidize.
Why do so many allergy claims get denied?
Two mechanisms deny most allergy claims. First, the pre-existing rule: ongoing allergies are named explicitly among chronic conditions at Embrace, and chronic conditions stay excluded for good, with no curable-condition reset after 12 clean months. Lemonade’s curable path in most states carries the same chronic carve-out. There is no version of these policies where a documented allergy becomes eligible again.
Second, the root-cause chain. Recurring claims get attributed to the underlying allergy: ear infections linked to chronic allergies can be denied under that exclusion rather than paid as standalone infections, and allergy-related eye inflammation follows the same logic. One documented allergy can quietly shape years of otherwise unrelated-looking claims.
Which pets need this page most?
Our breed data flags skin risk hardest for French Bulldogs, whose skin-fold dermatitis carries roughly 11 times the risk of a dog without skin folds, and Bulldogs generally, whose listing reads airway, skin and joints all at once. On the cat side, Sphynx cats carry skin conditions that need lifelong management, which makes enrolling before any sign appears especially valuable.
The enrollment lesson is sharper for allergies than for almost any other claim type: enroll between flare-ups, while the chart is clean. Waiting until the next itch arrives saves nothing, because the condition motivating the purchase is already excluded.
