Does pet insurance cover ear infections?
Yes. Ear infections are one of the most common illness claims, and every accident and illness policy we review covers them once the waiting period passes, typically about 14 days after enrollment. The catch is history: an infection documented before enrollment or during the wait counts as pre-existing. The good news is that ear infections are a textbook curable condition, so several insurers will re-cover a healed one later.

Lemonade is the one insurer on this site we can send you to for a live quote. That does not make it the right plan for every pet. As of August 2026, Lemonade Pet is not available in Alaska, Idaho, Kansas, Kentucky, South Dakota, Vermont, West Virginia, or Wyoming.
Some links here are partner links. If you buy through one, the insurer may pay us a fee. It never changes your premium and it never changes a ranking.

Treatment for a new ear infection, exam, cleaning, medicated drops, and follow-up visits, falls under illness terms on all eight plans we review. Illness waiting periods run about 14 days at Lemonade (accidents from 2 days or immediately in many states), Embrace, Spot, Figo and Pets Best, up to 15 days at Fetch, and 30 days at Trupanion. Healthy Paws applies its 15-day wait.
Reimbursement then follows your policy settings: your deductible first, then your reimbursement rate up to your annual limit. Recurring episodes are usually covered as new claims unless the insurer links them to an excluded underlying cause such as allergies.
Past ear infections and the curable rule
An ear infection on file before enrollment is pre-existing like anything else. But this condition is the standard example of a curable one: Embrace re-evaluates curable pre-existing conditions after 12 consecutive symptom-free, treatment-free months, and Healthy Paws documents a similar path for conditions fully resolved for a continuous 365 days. Lemonade offers a curable-condition path in most states too.
Two limits matter. First, knee or ligament conditions never qualify for these paths. Second, if the infections keep coming back because of an underlying chronic problem such as ongoing allergies, the underlying condition stays excluded, and claims tied to it can be denied as a result.
Practical timing advice
Enroll between infections, not during one. A claim filed during the waiting period will not pay, and the infection itself becomes pre-existing. If your pet has a healed infection in its history, check each insurer’s curable-condition language in our reviews before assuming the worst; treatment of the next unrelated infection is generally still covered.
