Does Trupanion pet insurance have a waiting period?
Yes. Trupanion has waiting periods: 5 days for accidents and 30 days for illness. Those two clocks are the ones published on our live Trupanion review, last verified 2026-08-17. A separate orthopedic, cruciate, or exam-waiver rule is not on that review, so it is unknown here.

Lemonade is the one insurer on this site we can send you to for a live quote. That does not make it the right plan for every pet. As of August 2026, Lemonade Pet is not available in Alaska, Idaho, Kansas, Kentucky, South Dakota, Vermont, West Virginia, or Wyoming.
Some links here are partner links. If you buy through one, the insurer may pay us a fee. It never changes your premium and it never changes a ranking.

Accident coverage waits 5 days. Illness coverage waits 30 days. Those numbers come from the live WhichPetPlan Trupanion review, last verified 2026-08-17, and they already appear on our Lemonade waiting-period page and our IVDD answer.
Anything that shows signs before enrollment or during the waiting period is treated as pre-existing and is not covered. That is the standard exclusion on the same review. Enroll while the pet is healthy if you want new accidents and new illnesses to have a chance of being claimable after those clocks run.
What this page does not claim
We do not invent a Trupanion orthopedic wait, a cruciate wait, or a vet-exam waiver. The live review lists accident and illness only. If Trupanion has extra clocks in a sample policy we have not cited here, treat those as unknown until we verify them on a live page.
Healthy Paws has a 16-state accident exception and exam waivers. That is a Healthy Paws rule. It does not apply to Trupanion, and we are not copying it over.
How Trupanion compares on the clocks we can cite
On accidents, Trupanion waits 5 days. Official Lemonade policy is 0 days for accidents nationwide. On illness, Trupanion waits 30 days. Official Lemonade illness wait is 14 days. Those Lemonade figures come from the same official page already cited on the Lemonade waiting-period answer.
If you are shopping speed of cover, those two pairs are the comparison we can stand behind. Do not assume Trupanion matches or skips anyone else on orthopedic or cruciate timing.
