Accident-only pet insurance does not pay for IVDD. If the bill you are planning for is imaging, surgery, or rehab for a disc, you need accident-and-illness cover enrolled before any limp, cry, or reluctance to jump is on the record.
WhichPetPlan has not published a named covers-IVDD or excludes-IVDD stance for every reviewed insurer. The one catalog that names IVDD in a waiting-period rule is Embrace. Other plans still cover new spinal illness after their published illness or orthopedic waits, as long as no signs showed earlier.
What actually decides an IVDD claim?
Pre-existing signs are the usual denial. Back pain, weakness in the hind legs, a hunched stance, or a refusal to jump can exclude related spinal claims for the life of the policy, even without a formal IVDD diagnosis. Waiting periods still apply after a clean enrollment. Official Lemonade waits are 0 days for accidents nationwide, 14 days for illness, and 30 days for orthopedic conditions, with no separate 6-month cruciate wait.
How do IVDD waiting periods differ by insurer?
Embrace is the explicit IVDD case: six months for cruciate ligament injury, IVDD, and hip dysplasia, cut to 14 days if your vet performs an orthopedic exam and submits it within the first two weeks. Spot has no separate orthopedic wait. The standard 14-day illness period applies. Lemonade uses a 30-day orthopedic clock and does not offer a vet-exam waiver.
Pets Best holds cruciate ligament events for 6 months and may reduce or waive that wait with a participating veterinarian. That cruciate rule is not an IVDD rule. Figo holds orthopedic claims for 6 months, waivable with a vet exam in the enrollment window. Healthy Paws publishes a long hip-dysplasia wait, not a separate IVDD wait, so a non-accident IVDD claim follows the 15-day illness clock in most states.
