Does Pet Insurance Cover Physical Therapy and Rehab?

Get a quote from Lemonade

Lemonade Pet is not sold in every state.

Short answer

Sometimes. Physical therapy and rehab are not automatic in most base pet insurance policies; they live mainly in add-ons. Lemonade sells a dedicated physical-therapy add-on, Pets Best offers physical therapy as a separate add-on, and Trupanion covers rehabilitative care via its optional recovery and complementary-care rider. Healthy Paws offers no rehab or wellness add-on at all. Coverage also requires the underlying condition to be covered, so the common 6-month cruciate waiting periods and pre-existing exclusions gate rehab claims just as they gate the surgery.

Lemonade is an alternative we can send you to. It is not a Trupanion enrollment link, and it is not a ranking of Lemonade over Trupanion. As of October 2, 2026, Lemonade Pet is not yet available in Alaska, Idaho, Kansas, South Dakota, Vermont, West Virginia, or Wyoming.

TL;DR

The short answer

Sometimes, and only if you plan for it. Physical therapy and rehabilitation are not automatically included in most base accident-and-illness policies; across our reviewed lineup, rehab sits mainly in optional add-ons or riders rather than standard coverage. Where an insurer explicitly covers it, claims flow through your deductible, reimbursement rate, and annual limit like any treatment for a covered condition.

Rehab matters most after the big orthopedic claims: cruciate ligament repair, IVDD back surgery, hip procedures. Recovery programs commonly involve multiple sessions over weeks, so costs accumulate even when individual visits are modest, and repeated sessions are exactly where an uncovered line item compounds.

Which insurers cover rehab, and how

Lemonade has the clearest structure: physical therapy is one of its separate optional add-ons, part of the widest a-la-carte menu among the insurers we review, alongside dental illness, behavioral conditions, vet visit fees and end-of-life expenses. If rehab is your priority, a policy built around stacking that add-on is the direct route.

Pets Best also lists physical therapy as a separate add-on to either of its plan tiers; note its Plus plan bundles exam-fee coverage rather than rehab, so do not conflate the two upgrades. Trupanion, which sells a single plan design with no traditional wellness product, handles this space through optional recovery and complementary-care add-ons covering rehabilitative styles of treatment. Healthy Paws offers neither wellness nor a comparable rehab add-on, which makes it the weakest structural fit if post-surgical rehabilitation is central to your plans. Embrace, Spot, Figo and Fetch sell wellness allowances or preventive products rather than explicit rehab riders, so confirm wording in the policy before assuming complementary therapy qualifies.

One more gate applies everywhere: the condition behind the rehab must itself be covered. Cruciate events wait 6 months at Embrace, Figo and Pets Best; Lemonade currently advertises 30 days for orthopedic conditions (check your state policy; exam waivers or reductions apply to the other named carriers), and hip dysplasia is excluded outright by Healthy Paws for dogs enrolled at age 6 or older. Rehab prescribed for an excluded condition is not claimable regardless of add-ons.

What rehab realistically costs against a premium

Our verified data does not publish per-session rehab prices, so speak in magnitudes: multi-week recovery programs after orthopedic surgery commonly accumulate into four figures across sessions, on top of the surgery itself. Compare current quotes for your pet and ZIP code using the same deductible, reimbursement rate, annual limit, and add-ons.

Check your annual limit too. Rehab rides the same cap as everything else; Spot's menu runs from $2,500 to unlimited while Fetch tops its listed tiers at $15,000, and a surgical year plus rehab is exactly when low caps pinch.

The honest verdict

If your dog is a breed with known orthopedic risk, treat rehab coverage as a selection criterion now rather than a discovery later. Compare current quotes for your pet and ZIP code using the same deductible, reimbursement rate, annual limit, and add-ons. Healthy Paws is excellent for unlimited payouts but structurally cannot cover rehab.

Rehab coverage FAQ

Does pet insurance cover physical therapy after surgery?
Only where the policy or an add-on explicitly includes it. Lemonade sells a dedicated physical-therapy add-on, Pets Best offers physical therapy as a separate add-on, and Trupanion covers rehabilitative treatment through its optional recovery and complementary-care rider. The underlying condition must also be covered, so waiting periods and pre-existing rules still apply.
Which pet insurance has a physical therapy add-on?
Lemonade and Pets Best both list physical therapy as standalone optional add-ons. Trupanion approaches the same need with its recovery/complementary-care add-on on its single unlimited plan. Healthy Paws offers no wellness or rehab add-on at any tier.
Is hydrotherapy covered by pet insurance?
Treat hydrotherapy as part of the rehab question: it is claimable only under coverage language that explicitly includes complementary or physical therapy, such as Lemonade's PT add-on or Trupanion's recovery and complementary-care rider. Confirm the wording in your specific policy before starting sessions.
