Is pet insurance worth it for seniors?
Sometimes, but the value drops. You can still buy a policy for an older pet, and new accidents plus new illnesses after the waiting period still claim. Premiums are highest for seniors, pre-existing exclusions cover more of the likely bills, and some conditions are gated by enrollment age, such as hip dysplasia at Healthy Paws for dogs enrolled at 6 or older. Compare the premium against a savings fund honestly.

Lemonade is the one insurer on this site we can send you to for a live quote. That does not make it the right plan for every pet. As of August 2026, Lemonade Pet is not available in Alaska, Idaho, Kansas, Kentucky, South Dakota, Vermont, West Virginia, or Wyoming.
Some links here are partner links. If you buy through one, the insurer may pay us a fee. It never changes your premium and it never changes a ranking.

What still gets covered on a senior pet?
New accidents can start quickly. Lemonade starts accident cover nationwide at 12:01 AM the day after purchase (0 days). New illnesses wait about 14 days at Lemonade and most of the lineup, 30 days at Trupanion.
Anything already on the chart is excluded. Arthritis, dental disease, and endocrine notes are common senior-chart items, and they stay out. That is why a senior policy often pays for the surprise, not the condition that motivated the purchase.
Which age rules should you check first?
Healthy Paws excludes hip dysplasia entirely for dogs enrolled at six or older. Lemonade does not publish that enrollment-age cutoff for hip dysplasia. Read the named hip dysplasia answer before you assume orthopedic cover on an older dog.
Illustrative starting estimates on this site are for a healthy one-year-old, not a senior. Senior quotes run higher. Get a real quote rather than scaling the $14-$35 cat or $28-$62 dog table.
