Figo vs Trupanion: which should you pick?

By the WhichPetPlan editorial team · Last verified 2026-08-25
Short answer

Trupanion wins on payout design: unlimited cover on every plan, direct clinic payment through VetDirect Pay, and a per-condition deductible paid once for the life of the pet, at about $62/mo illustrative for dogs versus $40 at Figo. Figo counters with the only 100% reimbursement tier in our lineup, 24-hour accident cover, and a lower bill every month.

Which one scores higher?

Trupanion takes dogs at 8.6 out of 10 in our rankings against Figo at 7.9; cats flip the order, with Figo at 8.0 and Trupanion at 7.8. Illustrative starting prices run about $62/mo for a Trupanion dog versus $40 at Figo, and $35 versus $23 for cats. Those are starting estimates for a young healthy animal, not quotes.

What does the extra cost at Trupanion buy?

Friction removal at the worst moment. Trupanion pays participating clinics directly at checkout through VetDirect Pay, so you cover only your deductible and 10% at the counter instead of fronting a four-figure bill, and about 75% of its claims are handled within 24 hours. Every policy is unlimited, reimbursement is fixed at 90%, and the deductible is per-condition: paid once per diagnosed condition for the life of the pet, configurable from $0 to $1,000 in $50 steps.

The costs are real too. It is consistently the most expensive plan we review month to month, there is no way to trade a lower reimbursement rate for a cheaper premium, illness claims wait 30 days (the longest clock we track), and there is no wellness option at any tier.

When does Figo make more sense?

Figo is the answer when payback rate or claim speed leads. Its 100% reimbursement tier is unique in our lineup, though it requires a $500 or $750 deductible and cannot be paired with the unlimited Higher Coverage plan, whose Popular sibling caps at $10,000. Accidents are covered after just 24 hours against Trupanion's five days, and the 6-month orthopedic wait can be waived with a vet exam submitted inside the enrollment window.

Know the service model before enrolling: claims and support run through the Pet Cloud app with no real phone line, and optional Wellness Powerups are the only route to routine care coverage.

Related questions

Is Figo cheaper than Trupanion?
Yes, by a wide margin on our illustrative estimates: about $40/mo for a healthy one-year-old dog versus $62 at Trupanion, and about $23 versus $35 for cats. Both figures are starting points, not quotes.
Which has the higher annual limit?
Trupanion, as standard: unlimited is built into every policy. Figo also reaches unlimited, but only on its Higher Coverage plan, and that plan cannot carry the 100% reimbursement tier, so you choose between the ceiling and the payback rate.
How do the waiting periods compare between Figo and Trupanion?
Figo covers accidents after 24 hours and illness after 14 days, holding orthopedic conditions 6 months unless an enrollment-window exam waives it. Trupanion waits 5 days for accidents and 30 days for illness, with no separate orthopedic hold listed in our review data.
