Does pet insurance cover urinary tract infections?

By the WhichPetPlan editorial team · Last verified 2026-08-27
Short answer

Yes, when a urinary tract infection is newly diagnosed after enrollment and the illness waiting period. The exam, urinalysis, imaging where prescribed, and antibiotics then claim minus your deductible, at your chosen 70, 80, or 90 percent rate, up to the annual limit. A simple UTI is often treated as curable. Recurrent urinary disease, a blocked cat, or a stone history is a different chart and can be excluded as pre-existing or chronic. This page is not the bladder-stones answer.

Lemonade is the one insurer on this site we can send you to for a live quote. That does not make it the right plan for every pet. As of August 2026, Lemonade Pet is not available in Alaska, Idaho, Kansas, Kentucky, South Dakota, Vermont, West Virginia, or Wyoming.

Some links here are partner links. If you buy through one, the insurer may pay us a fee. It never changes your premium and it never changes a ranking.

UTI versus bladder stones

A first-time bacterial UTI is an illness claim. Accident-only policies do not pay. Illness waits run about 14 days at Lemonade, Embrace, Spot, Pets Best, and Figo, up to 15 days at Fetch, 15 days at Healthy Paws, and 30 days at Trupanion. Official Lemonade waits are 0 days for accidents nationwide, 14 days for illness, and 30 days for orthopedic conditions.

Bladder stones are a separate unused URL on this site. A stone, crystal, or blockage note is not the same as a one-off UTI. Insurers read the urinary section of the chart as a family: a prior straining or blood-in-urine remark can be used against a later UTI or blockage claim.

What a covered UTI claim includes

When the infection is new, the claimable path covers the workup and the prescription: exam, urinalysis, culture where prescribed, and antibiotics, reimbursed minus your deductible at your chosen rate, up to the annual limit. We have not published a typical UTI invoice, so this page does not invent one.

A blocked cat is an emergency illness, not an accident. That visit follows the illness clock, not Lemonade's next-day accident start. See the emergency answer for ER mechanics.

When a UTI can be covered again

Embrace re-evaluates some curable conditions after 12 consecutive symptom-free, treatment-free months. Lemonade has a similar curable path in most states. A one-off UTI that fully cleared can sit on that path. Chronic or ongoing urinary disease does not.

Enroll while the urinary chart is clean. Waiting until a cat has already blocked, or a dog has already been treated for crystals, is how this claim dies.

Related questions

Does pet insurance cover a cat UTI?
Yes, on the same illness rule as dogs: new diagnosis after enrollment and the illness waiting period. A prior urinary note can exclude later episodes. Healthy Paws sells cat insurance. Lemonade is the paid quote path we publish.
Does pet insurance cover a blocked cat?
A urethral obstruction is an illness emergency. After the illness wait, the ER invoice can claim like any other covered illness. A prior urinary or blockage note makes it pre-existing. Accident-only policies do not pay.
Is a UTI the same as bladder stones?
No. Stones have their own answer. A UTI can exist without stones, and a stone history is the heavier pre-existing flag.
Can a past UTI be covered again?
Sometimes, if it was curable and the chart stays clean long enough for Embrace or Lemonade (most states) to re-evaluate after 12 months. Recurrent or chronic urinary disease stays excluded.
