Does pet insurance cover emergency vet visits?

By the WhichPetPlan editorial team · Last verified 2026-08-26
Short answer

Yes. Emergency vet visits claim as either an accident or an illness, depending on what sent you in. Accident-caused emergencies can start quickly: Lemonade begins accident cover nationwide at 12:01 AM the day after purchase (0 days). Illness emergencies wait about 14 days at Lemonade and most of the lineup, 30 days at Trupanion. Anything already on the chart stays excluded.

Lemonade is the one insurer on this site we can send you to for a live quote. That does not make it the right plan for every pet. As of August 2026, Lemonade Pet is not available in Alaska, Idaho, Kansas, Kentucky, South Dakota, Vermont, West Virginia, or Wyoming.

Accident emergency versus illness emergency

A hit-by-car, laceration, or toxin ingestion is an accident claim. Fetch has no accident waiting period from the policy effective date. Lemonade starts accident cover the next day. Embrace covers accidents as soon as the policy is effective. Figo waits 24 hours, Pets Best 3 days, Trupanion 5 days, Spot 14 days, and Healthy Paws 15 days in most states.

A vomiting crisis, blocked cat, or diabetic crash is an illness emergency. Those wait the illness clock: about 14 days at Lemonade, Embrace, Spot, Pets Best, and Figo, up to 15 at Fetch, 15 at Healthy Paws, and 30 at Trupanion. The ER bill does not change the category.

What an emergency claim pays

When the visit is covered, the claimable path is the real ER invoice: triage, diagnostics, hospitalization, surgery, and prescribed follow-up, minus your deductible, at 70, 80, or 90 percent, up to the annual limit.

Accident-only policies pay the accident ER and leave the illness ER on you. That is the cheaper narrow product, not a full emergency plan.

Related questions

Does pet insurance cover the emergency room the same week I enroll?
Only if the visit is an accident and your insurer's accident wait has already ended. Lemonade accident cover starts the next day. Illness emergencies still wait about 14 days at most plans we review.
Does Lemonade cover emergency vet visits?
Yes. Accident emergencies can claim from 12:01 AM the day after purchase. Illness emergencies wait 14 days. Orthopedic emergencies wait 30 days.
Are ER exam fees covered?
When the underlying accident or illness is covered, the ER exam is part of that claim, minus the deductible, at your reimbursement rate, up to the annual limit. Wellness add-ons do not fund emergency care.
What if the emergency is from a pre-existing condition?
It is excluded. A blocked cat with a prior urinary note, or a seizure in a dog with epilepsy already on file, follows the pre-existing rule, even at 2 a.m.
