Does pet insurance cover prescription medication?
Yes, when the prescription treats a new accident or illness that the policy covers after the waiting period. There is no separate drug formulary on the eight plans we review. The medication inherits the condition: if the illness is pre-existing, the drugs are too. Preventive products such as flea, tick, and heartworm prevention are not base-policy coverage. Figo Wellness Plus is the add-on that names prevention in our facts. Official Lemonade waits are 0 days for accidents nationwide, 14 days for illness, and 30 days for orthopedic conditions. Does pet insurance cover prescription medication?
A standard accident-and-illness policy reimburses treatment of new injuries and new illnesses. Prescribed drugs are part of that treatment, minus your deductible, at 70, 80, or 90 percent, up to the annual limit. An antibiotic for a first-time ear infection after enrollment is a covered claim. The same antibiotic for an ear infection already on the chart is excluded.
Illness waits run about 14 days at Lemonade, Embrace, Spot, Pets Best, and Figo, up to 15 days at Fetch, 15 days at Healthy Paws, and 30 days at Trupanion. Accident prescriptions follow the shorter accident clocks.
Chronic meds versus prevention
Lifelong medication for a new diagnosis (epilepsy, diabetes, Cushing's) claims each policy year at your rate, up to the annual limit. Trupanion charges its deductible once per diagnosed condition for the life of the pet, which favors a long drug bill. Healthy Paws and Trupanion offer unlimited designs. Lemonade configures up to $100,000. We have not published typical drug prices, so this page does not invent them.
Flea, tick, and heartworm prevention is routine care. It is excluded from base policies everywhere we review. Figo Wellness Plus adds flea, tick, and heartworm prevention, blood panels, fecal tests, and deworming. Lemonade's optional wellness add-on sits around $5 per month and is a separate product from the accident-and-illness core. Healthy Paws sells no wellness add-on at any tier. Trupanion has no routine-care wellness plan.
