Does pet insurance cover seizures?
Yes, if no seizure was documented before coverage started or during the illness waiting period. Epilepsy and new-onset seizures claim as illness on the dog- and cat-covering plans we review, reimbursing diagnostics and lifelong medication minus your deductible, at your chosen rate, up to the annual limit. A documented seizure before enrollment makes epilepsy pre-existing and permanently excluded, because it is chronic.

Lemonade is the one insurer on this site we can send you to for a live quote. That does not make it the right plan for every pet. As of August 2026, Lemonade Pet is not available in Alaska, Idaho, Kansas, Kentucky, South Dakota, Vermont, West Virginia, or Wyoming.

Are seizures an illness or an accident?
Idiopathic epilepsy and most first-time seizure workups sit on the illness side. Accident-only policies do not pay for them. Illness waits run about 14 days at Lemonade, Embrace, Spot, Pets Best, and Figo, up to 15 days at Fetch, 15 days at Healthy Paws, and 30 days at Trupanion. Official Lemonade waits are 0 days for accidents nationwide, 14 days for illness, and 30 days for orthopedic conditions.
A seizure during that window goes on file as pre-existing. Our Beagle breed data already names epilepsy as a signature risk, which is why enrollment timing matters more than the premium for that dog.
What a covered seizure claim includes
When the first seizure happens after the wait, the claimable path covers the workup and the medication: exam, bloodwork, imaging where prescribed, and anticonvulsants, reimbursed minus your deductible at 70, 80, or 90 percent, up to the annual limit.
Once diagnosed, epilepsy behaves as chronic. There is no curable-condition reset. That is why a clean chart at enrollment is the whole product.
