Does pet insurance cover Cushing's disease?

By the WhichPetPlan editorial team · Last verified 2026-08-27
Short answer

Yes, when Cushing's disease (hyperadrenocorticism) is newly diagnosed after enrollment and the illness waiting period. Bloodwork, imaging, and ongoing medication then claim minus your deductible, at your chosen 70, 80, or 90 percent rate, up to the annual limit. Cushing's is an illness, so accident-only policies do not pay. Once it is on the chart it is chronic: a pre-enrollment sign stays excluded for life, and it does not qualify for curable-condition reinstatement at Embrace or Lemonade in most states.

Lemonade is the one insurer on this site we can send you to for a live quote. That does not make it the right plan for every pet. As of August 2026, Lemonade Pet is not available in Alaska, Idaho, Kansas, Kentucky, South Dakota, Vermont, West Virginia, or Wyoming.

Some links here are partner links. If you buy through one, the insurer may pay us a fee. It never changes your premium and it never changes a ranking.

Is Cushing's an illness claim?

Cushing's is an endocrine illness, the same claim family as diabetes. Accident-only policies leave it on you. On a standard accident and illness policy, a new diagnosis claims after the illness waiting period: about 14 days at Lemonade, Embrace, Spot, Pets Best, and Figo, up to 15 days at Fetch, 15 days at Healthy Paws, and 30 days at Trupanion.

Official Lemonade waits are 0 days for accidents nationwide, 14 days for illness, and 30 days for orthopedic conditions, with no separate cruciate wait. Increased thirst, a pot-belly note, hair-loss notes, or abnormal adrenal or liver-enzyme remarks before enrollment or during that wait can make Cushing's pre-existing.

What a covered Cushing's claim includes

When the diagnosis is new, the claimable path covers the real lifelong bill: confirmatory testing, prescribed medication, and monitoring visits, reimbursed minus your deductible at your chosen rate, up to the annual limit. We have not published a typical Cushing's annual cost, so this page does not invent one.

Ceiling matters because the claim repeats every policy year. Lemonade configures up to $100,000. Healthy Paws and Trupanion pay unlimited on their designs. Trupanion charges its deductible once per diagnosed condition for the life of the pet. Those structures are compared on the insurer reviews. Premiums are illustrative starting estimates, never quotes.

Why a late enrollment rarely pays for Cushing's

Cushing's is typically diagnosed in older pets, which is also when the chart already carries adjacent notes. Waiting for a vet to write "rule out Cushing's" saves nothing. That note is enough to exclude the condition for the life of the policy.

This page is the category version. It is not leftover kidney, hypothyroidism, or heart-disease answers, and it is not a twin of the diabetes page. The mechanic is the same chronic-illness rule; the unused URL is the named disease people search.

Does Lemonade cover Cushing's disease?
