Confirm the orthopedic coverage start date
Lemonade currently advertises no accident wait from the policy effective date, 14 days for illnesses and 30 days for orthopedic conditions. Treat ACL injuries under the orthopedic terms in your policy. Older and state-specific documents can differ.
Ask for the exact start date, any applicable waiver and the sample policy for your state before buying. A limp during the waiting period can make later surgery pre-existing even if diagnosis comes afterward.
Check knee history and both-knee exclusions
Tell Lemonade about prior limping, knee treatment and symptoms in either leg. Ask how its pre-existing and bilateral-condition definitions apply to the other knee. Do not assume a healthy-looking second knee will be covered.
Surgery is only payable if the condition and treatment are eligible. Your deductible, reimbursement share, annual limit and exclusions still apply. No online coverage summary guarantees a particular claim.
Include exam fees and rehabilitation in the quote
Lemonade sells vet visit fee and physical therapy add-ons separately. Eligible surgery under the base policy does not mean every exam or rehab bill is included. Include those benefits when comparing current quotes.

What must be true before relying on cruciate coverage?
Lemonade’s published guidance describes a 30-day orthopedic waiting period. Cruciate signs recorded before coverage or during that period can make the condition pre-existing. The state-issued policy controls the actual claim.
Compare the options
- Compare coverage for future eligible orthopedic injuries after the applicable wait.
- Budget for an existing knee problem rather than assuming a new enrollment funds its treatment.
When to reconsider: A new policy is not a reliable funding plan for a pet already limping or scheduled for knee surgery.
