Short answer

Yes. You can let a policy lapse and buy another. Switching does not carry unused benefits, unused deductible credit, or a clean medical slate. The new insurer restarts accident, illness, and orthopedic waiting periods, and it reads the old vet records. Anything that showed signs before the new start date or during the new wait is pre-existing on the new policy, even if the old insurer used to pay it. Official Lemonade waits on a new policy are 0 days for accidents nationwide, 14 days for illness, and 30 days for orthopedic conditions. Embrace and Lemonade (most states) may re-evaluate some curable issues after 12 clean months. Chronic conditions and knee or ligament conditions do not get that reset. WhichPetPlan has not published a switching fee or a grace-period rule.

Can you switch pet insurance companies?

Nothing in the eight products we review locks you to one carrier for life. The trap is timing. If you cancel on Friday and the new policy's illness wait is 14 or 30 days, a diagnosis in that window can be excluded for the life of the new policy. Overlap the old policy through the new waits if you can float both premiums for a few weeks.

The old chart travels. Insurers look at vet records, prior claims, and application questions. A limp the old carrier paid can still be pre-existing for the new carrier. Healthy Paws and Spot also treat both knees as linked, so one old cruciate claim can exclude the other knee on the new policy.

When switching is rational

Switch for a structure the old plan cannot offer: Trupanion Vet Direct Pay if you cannot float ER bills; Healthy Paws unlimited if a cap is about to pinch; Figo 100% if you accept the $500 or $750 deductible and the $10,000 Popular cap; Lemonade if price is the job and you live where it is sold. Rankings stay editorial. Lemonade is the only live Get-quote hop. There is no /go for the insurer you are leaving.

Do not switch to "reset" a pre-existing condition. That never works. A new policy protects you against new problems only. Seniors pay more, and the likely claims are already on the chart. See /answers/pet-insurance-for-seniors.

What this page does not invent

We have not published cancellation penalties, unused-premium refunds, or a required overlap length. If a fact is not in the insurer data files, it is omitted. Quote the new carrier, read the new waits, and keep the old policy live until those waits end. Lemonade Pet is not sold in AK, ID, KS, KY, SD, VT, WV, or WY as of August 2026.

Related questions

Do waiting periods restart when you switch pet insurers?
Yes. The new policy runs its own accident, illness, and orthopedic clocks. Official Lemonade waits on a new policy are 0 days accident nationwide, 14 days illness, and 30 days orthopedic.
Will the new insurer cover a condition the old insurer already paid?
Usually no. The new insurer reads the chart. A paid claim is also a documented history. That history is pre-existing on the new policy.
Can you switch to get a pre-existing condition covered?
No. Switching does not wipe the record. Embrace and Lemonade (most states) may re-evaluate some curable issues after 12 clean months. Chronic conditions stay excluded.
Is there a /go for the insurer I want to leave?
No. Lemonade is the only live Get-quote hop. Use the review pages for unpaid carriers and quote them on their own sites.
