Trupanion vs Healthy Paws
Healthy Paws wins on price by a wide margin: illustrative dog premiums start around $44/mo versus $62/mo for Trupanion, and Healthy Paws scores 9.3 against 8.6. Both pay out with no annual limit. Trupanion earns its premium in exactly one scenario: it is the only insurer here with true VetDirect Pay, settling the bill at the clinic desk so you cover only your deductible and 10% instead of fronting thousands and waiting for reimbursement. If you cannot float a $5,000 emergency bill, Trupanion is worth the extra money. If you can, Healthy Paws gives you unlimited coverage for much less per month.

Starting prices are illustrative estimates for a healthy one-year-old animal, not quotes. Your real premium depends on breed, age, ZIP code, deductible and reimbursement rate.
Pre-existing conditions
Trupanion: Not covered, standard exclusion for signs shown before enrollment or during the waiting period.
Healthy Paws: Not covered. A condition counts as pre-existing if it showed any sign, even undiagnosed, before your policy started or during the 15-day waiting period. If one knee's cruciate ligament was hurt before enrollment or during the wait, the other knee's cruciate is excluded too.
Choose Trupanion if
You cannot float a big vet bill. Trupanion pays participating clinics directly at checkout, so a $6,000 surgery costs you your deductible plus 10% at the counter rather than $6,000 on a credit card and a reimbursement wait. The deductible is per-condition, not annual: pay it once per diagnosed condition for the life of the pet. The costs are real though. It is the priciest plan here month to month, 90% is the only reimbursement rate on offer, and the illness waiting period is 30 days.
Choose Healthy Paws if
You can front a vet bill and wait for reimbursement. Healthy Paws matches Trupanion on the thing that matters most (no annual limit) for a much lower illustrative starting price, has no accident waiting period at all, and lets you pick 70%, 80% or 90% reimbursement instead of locking you at 90%. Watch the age rules: premiums climb steeply after eight, and hip dysplasia is excluded for dogs enrolled at 6 or older.
