Lemonade vs Trupanion: which should you pick?
Trupanion wins on payout design: unlimited payout standard, true Vet Direct Pay at participating clinics (about 75% of claims within 24 hours), fixed 90% reimbursement, and a per-condition deductible paid once per diagnosed condition for life. Lemonade wins on price and score: illustrative $28/mo for a dog versus $62/mo ($16 vs $35 for cats), scoring 9.0 vs 8.6 for dogs and 9.2 vs 7.8 for cats. Most buyers should price Lemonade first and pay Trupanion’s premium only if claim-day friction is the priority.
Get a Lemonade quote
Lemonade is the one insurer on this site we can send you to for a live quote. That does not make it the right plan for every pet. As of August 2026, Lemonade Pet is not available in Alaska, Idaho, Kansas, Kentucky, South Dakota, Vermont, West Virginia, or Wyoming.
Some links here are partner links. If you buy through one, the insurer may pay us a fee. It never changes your premium and it never changes a ranking.

Payout design versus price
Trupanion’s once-per-lifetime per-condition deductible suits chronic diagnoses that claim every year; Lemonade resets its $100-$750 annual deductible each policy year but starts far lower month to month.
Ceiling differs too: Lemonade caps at $100,000 configured while Trupanion pays unlimited, and only Trupanion settles claims directly with the clinic so you never front the bill.
Who each one fits
Lemonade fits budget-first owners, cats, and add-on stackers in the many states where it sells (it is absent from AK, ID, KS, KY, SD, VT, WV and WY as of August 2026). Trupanion fits owners of chronically ill-prone breeds who value direct payment and no annual cap enough to pay roughly double per month.
