Does pet insurance cover kidney disease?

By the WhichPetPlan editorial team · Last verified 2026-08-26
Short answer

Yes, when kidney disease is newly diagnosed after enrollment and the illness waiting period. Diagnostics, hospitalization, prescription diets when prescribed, and follow-up care then claim minus your deductible, at your chosen 70, 80, or 90 percent rate, up to your annual limit. Kidney disease documented before enrollment or during the wait is pre-existing and stays excluded for life, because every insurer we review treats it as chronic.

Lemonade is the one insurer on this site we can send you to for a live quote. That does not make it the right plan for every pet. As of August 2026, Lemonade Pet is not available in Alaska, Idaho, Kansas, Kentucky, South Dakota, Vermont, West Virginia, or Wyoming.

Some links here are partner links. If you buy through one, the insurer may pay us a fee. It never changes your premium and it never changes a ranking.

Is kidney disease an illness claim?

Kidney disease is an illness, not an accident. Accident-only policies do not pay for it. On a standard accident and illness policy, a new diagnosis claims after the illness waiting period: about 14 days at Lemonade, Embrace, Spot, Pets Best, and Figo, up to 15 days at Fetch, 15 days at Healthy Paws, and 30 days at Trupanion.

Increased thirst, weight change, or a kidney-value note before enrollment or during that wait makes kidney disease pre-existing. Chronic conditions never qualify for the curable-condition path at Lemonade (most states) or Embrace.

What a covered kidney-disease claim includes

When the diagnosis is new, the claimable path covers the real bill: bloodwork, imaging, fluids, hospitalization, and prescribed follow-up, reimbursed minus your deductible at your chosen rate, up to the annual limit.

Ceiling matters because kidney claims can repeat. Lemonade configures up to $100,000. Healthy Paws and Trupanion pay unlimited on their designs. Those structures are compared on our insurer reviews. Premiums are illustrative starting estimates, never quotes.

Why enrollment timing decides almost everything

Waiting until a vet writes "monitor kidney values" saves nothing. That note is enough to exclude the condition for the life of the policy. Enroll while the chart is clean so any later diagnosis lands inside covered territory.

This page is the category version of the same illness-wait and chronic-exclusion mechanics already used on the diabetes and emergency answers.
