Does pet insurance cover giardia?
Yes. Giardia is covered as an ordinary illness on every plan we review once the illness waiting period passes, typically about 14 to 15 days after enrollment. Healthy Paws names it among its curable pre-existing examples, so even a positive test before enrollment can be re-covered later by insurers with reinstatement paths once it has fully resolved.

Giardia treatment claims under illness terms on all eight plans we review: the vet visit, fecal testing, and prescribed medication such as dewormers or antiprotozoals. Illness waiting periods run about 14 days at Lemonade (accidents from 2 days or immediately in many states), Embrace, Spot, Figo and Pets Best, up to 15 days at Fetch and Healthy Paws, and 30 days at Trupanion.
The timing issue is common for puppies: giardia often surfaces in the first weeks of ownership, which is frequently inside a waiting period. A diagnosis during that window is not payable and goes on file as pre-existing.
Why giardia is the easiest pre-existing condition to shake
Insurers name parasitic infections like giardia in their own curable-condition examples: Healthy Paws lists it among conditions eligible for re-coverage after full resolution for a continuous 365 days without symptoms or treatment, and Embrace’s 12-month symptom-free path works the same way. Lemonade offers a curable path in most states.
So unlike chronic diagnoses, an early giardia episode does not shadow the pet forever. Once treated and resolved, later unrelated illnesses claim normally, and even the giardia itself becomes claimable again after the clean period at insurers with reinstatement language.
