Does pet insurance cover FIP?

By the WhichPetPlan editorial team · Last verified 2026-08-24
Short answer

Yes, if signs appear after coverage starts. FIP is covered under standard illness terms on every cat-insuring plan we review once the illness waiting period passes, typically 14 to 30 days. It has no special exclusion. But any fever, lethargy or weight loss documented before enrollment or during the wait makes a later FIP diagnosis pre-existing and permanently excluded.

Lemonade is the one insurer on this site we can send you to for a live quote. That does not make it the right plan for every pet. As of August 2026, Lemonade Pet is not available in Alaska, Idaho, Kansas, Kentucky, South Dakota, Vermont, West Virginia, or Wyoming.

How FIP is treated under a policy

Feline infectious peritonitis is a viral disease, largely fatal without treatment, and our Bengal research flags the breed as carrying a higher FIP risk than non-pedigree cats. Policies do not single FIP out: it is an illness like any other, so diagnosis and treatment are claimable once your policy is past its waiting period and no earlier signs are on record.

Illness waiting periods run about 14 days at Lemonade (accidents from 2 days or immediately in many states), Embrace, Spot, Figo and Pets Best, up to 15 days at Fetch, and 30 days at Trupanion. Treatment can be prolonged and expensive, which puts annual-limit headroom in play: Trupanion pays unlimited with a once-per-condition deductible; Embrace, Spot and Lemonade offer unlimited or high-cap options.

The pre-existing problem

The incubation window is what makes FIP different from most claims. Early symptoms look generic, a fever, appetite loss, weight drift, and if a vet records them before enrollment or during the waiting period, a later FIP diagnosis can be denied as pre-existing. There is no cure path here: FIP is not a condition that resets after a clean year the way an ear infection might.

That is why enrollment timing matters more for this disease than for almost any other cat claim. The practical move is insuring a kitten immediately on adoption, so the waiting period clears inside the window where early vague symptoms would otherwise strand you uncovered.

What to check before you buy

Compare the illness wait, the annual limit, and whether chronic long-course treatment stays claimable across policy years. Trupanion’s per-condition deductible is designed for exactly this pattern of one diagnosis with ongoing claims; annual-deductible plans reset that cost every policy year.

Related questions

Is FIP excluded by pet insurers?
No plan we review names FIP as a specific exclusion. It is covered as an ordinary illness subject to waiting periods and the pre-existing rule.
Why would a FIP claim be denied?
Almost always timing. If fever, lethargy or weight loss was documented before enrollment or during the waiting period, insurers classify the resulting FIP diagnosis as pre-existing and deny the claim.
Which cats face the highest FIP risk?
Our breed data flags Bengals with a higher FIP risk than non-pedigree cats, alongside hip dysplasia and patellar luxation as the breed’s other named risks. Illustrative Bengal premiums start near $27/mo, which is an estimate rather than a quote.
