Does pet insurance cover HCM?
Lemonade Pet is not sold in every state.
HCM (hypertrophic cardiomyopathy) is an illness and hereditary heart claim, not an accident. An accident-and-illness policy can pay for new HCM diagnostics and treatment when signs first appear after enrollment and after the illness waiting period. That is not a guarantee. Every insurer we review excludes pre-existing signs: a murmur, cough, or lethargy noted before the wait ends stays excluded. Illness waits on the cat-covering plans we review run about 14 days at Lemonade, Embrace, Spot, Figo, and Pets Best, and 30 days at Trupanion. Healthy Paws sells cat insurance. WhichPetPlan has not published a named covers-HCM stance for Healthy Paws. Embrace may re-evaluate some curable conditions after 12 clean months; HCM is chronic once diagnosed and stays excluded if it showed before the policy. Accident-only policies do not cover HCM. WhichPetPlan has not published a named covers-HCM or excludes-HCM stance for any of the eight reviewed insurers. The Sphynx HCM guide and the British Shorthair page are the breed-locked companions; this page does not replace them.

Lemonade is the one insurer on this site we can send you to for a live quote. That does not make it the right plan for every pet. As of October 2, 2026, Lemonade Pet is not yet available in Alaska, Idaho, Kansas, South Dakota, Vermont, West Virginia, or Wyoming.

What HCM is, in insurance terms
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is a genetic heart condition. Our Sphynx guide describes expensive diagnostics and long-term management. Our British Shorthair page puts HCM next to obesity-linked claims as the breed-typical path. Insurers treat that as illness, hereditary, or congenital disease, not as trauma from an accident.
Accident-only pet insurance does not pay for HCM. Illness is outside that product. If the bill you are planning for is cardiac workup or heart treatment, you need accident-and-illness cover, enrolled before any murmur, cough, or lethargy is on the record.
What actually decides an HCM claim
Pre-existing signs are the usual denial. A heart murmur found on a first vet visit, a cough, or lethargy can exclude related heart claims for the life of the policy, even without a formal HCM diagnosis. That rule is on every review we publish. The Sphynx guide says you cannot wait for symptoms. The British Shorthair page says the same: enroll before a murmur or weight-related illness is noted.
Waiting periods still apply after a clean enrollment. Published illness waits on cat-covering plans are 14 days at Lemonade, Embrace, Spot, Figo, and Pets Best, and 30 days at Trupanion. Signs that appear during those windows are treated as pre-existing. Do not confuse HCM with the 6-month cruciate or hip clocks; those are a different claim path.
Healthy Paws sells dog and cat insurance. WhichPetPlan has not published a named covers-HCM or excludes-HCM stance for Healthy Paws. That is already the limit of what we can say on the Sphynx guide, the British Shorthair page, and the Healthy Paws review.
What we can and cannot say about the eight insurers
We can say this: none of the eight reviews names HCM as a covered benefit or as a carved-out exclusion. Hereditary cover is where plans differ in general, not because we have an HCM scorecard. Coverage, when it exists, is accident-and-illness cover for a new condition after the illness wait, and it fails if signs were pre-existing.
Embrace distinguishes curable from chronic. An old ear infection can be re-evaluated after 12 consecutive symptom-free, treatment-free months. The Sphynx and British Shorthair guides both say HCM is chronic once diagnosed, so that path does not reopen a heart claim that showed before the policy. Lemonade and Trupanion use the standard exclusion for signs before enrollment or during the wait.
This page cites the Sphynx HCM blog and the British Shorthair breed page. It does not replace them, and it does not retarget those URLs. Maine Coon and Ragdoll pages on this site also flag HCM as a breed-typical claim, with the same enroll-before-signs rule.
How to give an HCM claim a chance
Enroll while the animal is young and the record is clean. Every month you wait is a month a murmur or a cough note can permanently shrink what a policy will pay. Get the vet records before you buy so you know what an insurer will point to later.
Buy accident-and-illness cover, not accident-only. Compare the actual wording on the review pages, especially hereditary and congenital language, plus the illness waiting period. Request current quotes for your cat's breed, age and ZIP code using the same coverage choices.
