Does pet insurance cover cancer?

By the WhichPetPlan editorial team · Last verified 2026-08-25
Short answer

Yes. Cancer is an illness claim, and every accident and illness plan WhichPetPlan reviews covers a new cancer diagnosis and its treatment, including surgery and chemotherapy, once the illness waiting period passes. Two things decide how much a policy actually pays: enrollment timing, because any lump or symptom documented before enrollment or during the wait becomes a permanent pre-existing exclusion, and the annual limit, which ranges from configured caps such as $100,000 at Lemonade to unlimited options at Healthy Paws and Trupanion.

Lemonade is the one insurer on this site we can send you to for a live quote. That does not make it the right plan for every pet. As of August 2026, Lemonade Pet is not available in Alaska, Idaho, Kansas, Kentucky, South Dakota, Vermont, West Virginia, or Wyoming.

Some links here are partner links. If you buy through one, the insurer may pay us a fee. It never changes your premium and it never changes a ranking.

Is cancer covered as an accident or an illness?

Cancer sits on the illness side of every policy we review. That distinction matters once: accident-only policies, the cheaper narrow product some insurers sell, do not pay for cancer at all. On a standard accident and illness policy, a new diagnosis claims like any other illness, alongside infections and hereditary conditions, after the illness waiting period ends.

Those illness waits run about 14 days at Lemonade, Embrace, Spot, Pets Best and Figo, up to 15 days at Fetch, 15 days at Healthy Paws, and 30 days at Trupanion. A diagnosis inside the window is not automatically denied; the question is whether any sign of it was documented earlier.

What does a cancer claim pay for?

When the diagnosis is new, the claimable path covers the real oncology bill: diagnostic imaging and labwork, surgery, chemotherapy and other ongoing treatment, and prescription medication, reimbursed minus your deductible, at your chosen 70, 80 or 90 percent rate, up to your annual limit.

The annual limit is the number that matters most here. Cancer is one of the most expensive claim categories in pet insurance, and a long treatment course can consume a low cap in months. Our Golden Retriever breed guide makes the same point: unlimited limits matter more for oncology than a $5,000 cap.

How much will each reviewed insurer pay toward cancer?

Healthy Paws and Trupanion are the two with unlimited options doing the heavy lifting: Trupanion ships unlimited on every plan, with its per-condition deductible paid once per diagnosed condition, while Healthy Paws offers a $5,000, $7,000 or unlimited menu. Lemonade caps at $100,000 configured, workable for many treatment paths. Fetch tops out at a $15,000 listed tier, with higher limits only by contacting the insurer directly. Spot runs the widest cap menu in this lineup, up to unlimited, Embrace spans $2,000 to unlimited, and Pets Best offers $5,000, $10,000 or unlimited. Figo’s Popular plan caps at $10,000 while its Higher Coverage plan has no annual limit.

Price varies as much as the ceilings. Our reviews carry illustrative starting estimates, with Lemonade listings beginning around $28/mo for dogs, while Trupanion is consistently the most expensive plan in this lineup month to month. Those figures are starting estimates, not quotes, and the unlimited-cap plans are priced accordingly.

When does cancer become a pre-existing condition?

Every insurer we review excludes anything that showed signs before your policy started or during the waiting period, even without a formal diagnosis. A lump noted at a routine visit or an unexplained weight change in your vet’s records, any documentation predating coverage, can make a later cancer diagnosis ineligible for the life of the policy.

There is no reset. Embrace’s curable-condition program re-covers some issues after 12 symptom-free months, but cancer, once treated, is a chronic condition and never qualifies. Enrolling young and healthy, before anything is written down, is the only reliable way to keep an oncology claim alive.

Related questions

Does pet insurance cover chemotherapy?
Yes. Chemotherapy is part of cancer treatment, an illness claim covered by every accident and illness plan we review when the diagnosis is new and the illness waiting period has passed. It reimburses like any other treatment, minus your deductible at your chosen rate, up to your annual limit.
Which pet insurance is best for cancer coverage?
For worst-case oncology bills, the unlimited options lead: Trupanion pays unlimited on every plan and charges its per-condition deductible once per condition, and Healthy Paws offers unlimited on its limit menu. Both carry tradeoffs: Trupanion is consistently the most expensive month to month, and Healthy Paws sells no wellness add-on. Lemonade’s configured $100,000 ceiling is workable for many courses but lower than unlimited rivals.
Will insurance cover my pet’s cancer if a lump was already noted?
No. A lump or other sign documented before enrollment or during the waiting period makes the resulting cancer a pre-existing condition at every insurer we review, diagnosed or not. A new policy would still cover unrelated new accidents and illnesses.
Does accident-only pet insurance cover cancer?
No. Cancer is an illness claim and accident-only policies pay for unexpected injuries only. If a cancer course would change your treatment decision, you want accident and illness cover enrolled before any symptoms appear.
