Does pet insurance cover vomiting and diarrhea?

By the WhichPetPlan editorial team · Last verified 2026-08-24
Short answer

Yes. Vomiting and diarrhea are covered as illness claims on every plan we review once the illness waiting period passes, typically about 14 to 15 days, including the exam, diagnostics and treatment. If the cause is a swallowed object or toxin, the claim runs under accident terms instead, which often start even sooner.

Lemonade is the one insurer on this site we can send you to for a live quote. That does not make it the right plan for every pet. As of August 2026, Lemonade Pet is not available in Alaska, Idaho, Kansas, Kentucky, South Dakota, Vermont, West Virginia, or Wyoming.

Illness route versus accident route

An ordinary stomach upset claims under illness terms: illness waiting periods run about 14 days at Lemonade (accidents from 2 days or immediately in many states), Embrace, Spot, Figo and Pets Best, up to 15 days at Fetch and Healthy Paws, and 30 days at Trupanion. Diagnostics such as bloodwork and imaging are covered as part of working up the claim on the plans we review.

If the vomiting turns out to be a swallowed toy, string or toxin, that is an accident, so accident waiting periods govern instead, and several plans start accident cover in days. Our swallowed-objects guide covers that surgery scenario in detail.

The pre-existing pattern

A single resolved bout is the other textbook curable condition: Embrace cites a one-off bout of vomiting in its curable pre-existing language, re-coverable after 12 consecutive symptom-free months, with Healthy Paws documenting a similar 365-day path and Lemonade offering a curable path in most states.

Chronic digestive disease is different. Ongoing conditions stay excluded once documented, and repeated episodes can be attributed to that underlying condition. Enroll between episodes, not during one, because anything treated during the waiting period goes on file as pre-existing.

Related questions

Is a single vomiting episode worth claiming?
If the bill exceeds your deductible, yes. Claims also establish the condition’s history, so submit eligible claims as your insurer recommends rather than deciding case by case.
What if my pet vomits during the waiting period?
That episode is not payable, and it becomes a documented pre-existing condition. A fully resolved one-off bout can later qualify for reinstatement at insurers with curable-condition paths.
Does coverage differ if a foreign object caused it?
Yes, in classification. Swallowed objects are accidents, so accident waiting periods apply (as short as 2 days at Lemonade, immediate in many states) rather than the longer illness waits.
