Does pet insurance cover kennel cough?
Yes. Kennel cough is covered as an ordinary illness on every dog-insuring plan we review once the illness waiting period passes, typically about 14 to 15 days. Vaccines themselves are never covered because they count as routine care. And if your dog is diagnosed during the waiting period or was coughing before enrollment, that episode becomes pre-existing.

Lemonade is the one insurer on this site we can send you to for a live quote. That does not make it the right plan for every pet. As of August 2026, Lemonade Pet is not available in Alaska, Idaho, Kansas, Kentucky, South Dakota, Vermont, West Virginia, or Wyoming.

Kennel cough treatment, the vet visit, exam, and any prescribed cough suppressants or antibiotics for secondary infection, falls under illness terms on all eight plans we review. Illness waiting periods run about 14 days at Lemonade (accidents from 2 days or immediately in many states), Embrace, Spot, Figo and Pets Best, up to 15 days at Fetch and at Healthy Paws, and 30 days at Trupanion.
The bordetella vaccine is different: vaccination counts as preventive care, which no core accident and illness policy covers. Only optional wellness add-ons fund vaccines, such as Lemonade’s wellness add-on or Embrace’s Wellness Rewards allowance.
The timing trap
Kennel cough shows up fast, often right after boarding, daycare or adoption, which is exactly when many owners are still inside a waiting period. A diagnosis during the wait is not payable, and the condition goes on file as pre-existing. Because kennel cough is also the textbook curable condition, insurers name it in their reinstatement language: Healthy Paws lists it among conditions that may be re-covered after full resolution for a continuous 365 days, Embrace re-evaluates curable conditions after 12 symptom-free months, and Lemonade has a curable path in most states.
So an early bout is rarely a permanent loss. Enroll between symptoms, ride out the wait, and later episodes claim normally under illness terms.
When repeat infections signal something else
Frequent recurrences can point to an underlying chronic problem, and claims tied back to that underlying cause can be denied under its exclusion. Isolated resolved episodes are treated as separate new illnesses by the plans we review.
